Principal Beth Gibney is pleased to share that Pierce Elementary School’s turtle hatchling program will be featured on New Hampshire PBS’s “Window to the Wild” show in March.
This past fall, NHPBS visited the third-grade class at the school in Bennington, to film and learn more about their turtle “Head Starting” program, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Harris Center for Conservation Education and the N.H. Fish and Game Department.
As a part of the program, students in Teacher Jenn Sutton’s class are raising four turtles, Penny, Myrtle, Rocky and Flash. Students are following Zoo New England’s protocols for caring for the turtles, and will release them in May.
“The hatchling project has been so enriching for our class and school as a community,” Principal Gibney said. “Our class is very fortunate to have so many people come together to bring these turtles to our classroom. It is a truly integrated learning experience that ranges from social emotional learning to math, reading, writing and science.”
The story will air online on Wednesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. on NHPBS. To view it at that time, please click this link: NHPBS.ORG/WINDOWS.
