DUBLIN – Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and Principal Shawne Hilliard are pleased to announce that Dublin Consolidated School students are participating in the “One School, One Book” program for the second year in a row.

As part of the program, all students are reading “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” by Richard and Florence Atwater. The program aims to build literacy skills, cultivate a joy for reading and support collaboration across the entire school.

A kick-off assembly took place on Jan. 27. Since then, students have been encouraged to read each Monday to Thursday evening. Students were given a copy of the book, a bookmark and a reading schedule.

Students participate in daily activities throughout the school that correlate with each chapter. Additionally, the school is decorated with penguins to get students excited about reading.

Students are expected to finish the book by Feb. 7. The program culminated with a Literacy night on Feb. 2 where students shared the artworks and projects that they have created throughout the activities.

“Our students have expressed a real love for this book and excitement for all the fun activities associated with this program,” Principal Hilliard said. “It is great to see students from kindergarten to Grade 4 come together for a common purpose that supports learning, collaboration and fun.”

The book, which won a John Newbery Medal, tells the story of Mr. Popper and his adventures with penguins.

The program is sponsored by the PTO.
