GREENFIELD — Greenfield Elementary School Principal Colleen Roy is excited to announce that students raised almost $3,000 during the school’s second annual Read-a-Thon, and are continuing their reading through March in a bracket-style competition.

The Read-a-Thon was one of several reading contests being held at the school this year.

Between Feb. 10 and Feb. 24, staff and students at Greenfield Elementary dropped everything and read (DEAR) each school day from 9 to 9:10 a.m. The school had the goal of 10,000 minutes read during the Read-a-Thon, as well as raising $3,000.

At the end, the district exceeded its reading goal by 780 minutes and missed its fundraising goal by just $56.

Students are continuing book-reading contests with this month’s March Madness Reading Bracket. Each class will read 16 books and vote for their favorites – bracket style – over the course of March.

The event will feature several themes, including an author match-up that pits two books by one author against one another, award winner match-up pitting two Caldecott winners against each other, and a women’s history match-up, where students will learn about artist Frida Kahlo and scientist Temple Grandin.

After each class completes a matchup, they will vote on their favorite and winners will be entered to determine the ultimate winner. Last year’s winner was “Cat Problems” by Jory John, and John’s follow-up book “Giraffe Problems” is the consensus number one seed and tournament favorite this year.
