GREENFIELD — Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and Principal Shawne Hilliard are pleased to announce that Greenfield Elementary is participating in a school-wide reading initiative this March.

March Madness kicked off with a visit from author and illustrator Marty Kelley, who shared his process for writing and illustrating books. Students sat spellbound as he told stories, drew, and also presented the school with an original drawing and a copy of his book “Ollie & Prima”.

During the month students from all grades will be reading books and voting on their favorites to move through a bracket until one book is left standing. Books in the tournament will include wordless books, award winners, and some from New Hampshire authors.

The initiative aims to promote reading and engage students in books.

Additionally, students will also be participating in a read-a-thon sponsored by the Greenfield PTO. Families can activate a student’s Read-a-Thon page, track their reading, and receive donations from family and friends. It is the PTOs largest fundraising event and encourages reading!

The March Madness month-long reading program will conclude with a literacy night for families.

“This is a wonderful initiative for our students and staff to participate in as we encourage growth and learning through books, not just this month but every month,” said Principal Hilliard. “I would like to thank our faculty and teachers for their participation and for getting our students excited about reading. I would also like to thank the PTO for their support of the program and for sponsoring the read-a-thon.”
