Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and Principal Jessica Vezina are pleased to share that Hancock Elementary School has kicked off its first month of the newly created Community Reader series.

The school’s mission for the series is to highlight each of the school’s core values, respect, responsibility, safety, and kindness, as well as other valuable traits including perseverance, empathy, cooperation, and compassion, by inviting community members to visit HES and read to students.

Dan Harper, the Hancock representative currently serving on the ConVal School Board, visited HES on Tuesday, Sept. 12, as this month’s community reader. As part of the day, all HES students read “The Way I Act” by Steve Metzger, which explores 13 ways of behaving and positive ideas about how to act in various situations.

The event led to an abundance of conversation about the book and about being respectful toward others. Students also got the opportunity to learn more about their community through their discussions with Harper.

The Community Reader event series, spearheaded by Grade 3 teacher Emily LaCroix, will occur monthly at HES with a new theme and guest.

“The Community Reader series has been created as a way to integrate members of the town and district communities into the HES community through reading,” said Principal Vezina. “This new opportunity also supports students’ learning about the value being focused on each month in a fun and engaging way. We are very excited to continue this program in the coming months!”
