Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and Principal Rachel Hill would like to share that Francestown Elementary School recently held an open house for students, staff, and families to come together and celebrate learning.

The open house was held on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. During the event, students took families on tours of the building. As families walked through the school, students shared riddles that they had written about themselves and looked at posters and projects that explained what makes them a special part of the school community.

Families also explored Teacher Laura Doell’s Curiosity Corner, where students have been asking questions about unfamiliar objects and working to answer them. After asking their questions, they conduct research to learn more about the object. Students recently delved into the development and history of the compass.

The open house was designed to get the community involved in celebrating learning and the first few days of the school year. Approximately 90 percent of the school community was represented at the event.

In addition, a variety of local organizations attended the event to share information and resources. The George Holmes Bixby Memorial Library sent a representative to help children and families sign up for library cards and share programs they offer. The Grapevine Family and Community Resource Center distributed pamphlets on baby groups, parent support groups, and resources available in the community including fuel assistance, tool shed, wood shed, mental health connections, and more. The Boy Scouts shared projects they had worked on including the completion of small wooden cars that were built to race.

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) also held a pizza fundraiser to raise money for its yearly events and create a family-friendly atmosphere. The pizza was supplied by a local vendor, New Boston Pizza.

“This open house was a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with one another and celebrate the learning of their students,” said Principal Hill. “We are so happy with the turn out of this event and we can’t wait to hold more events where our school community can come together in the future!”
