BENNINGTON — Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders and Principal Alisha Hansen-Proulx are pleased to announce that the Pierce School recently hosted local Naturalist and Children’s Author Susie Spikol during a Title I dinner.

Pierce School hosted the annual dinner on Oct. 25 for students and community members, with special guest Spikol from the Harris Center. Students and families enjoyed pizza, salad, and desserts as part of the Title I dinner.

After dinner, Spikol spoke with students about her book, The Animal Adventurer’s Guide: How to Prowl for an Owl, Make Snail Slime, and Catch a Frog Barehanded,” and how to safely interact with and observe animals and small creatures in the wild.

Spikol also provided interactive learning sessions for students to create their own owl caller using a soda can, make animal tracks using molds and stamps, and make tissue paper flowers.

Additionally, the Pierce School, in collaboration with the school’s Title I program, provided take-home science kits for students and purchased copies of Spikol’s book for classroom and library use.

The goal of the dinner was to bring the community together for an interactive evening of learning, and inform parents about the school and community compact program through Title I.

Title I supports students who may need additional assistance in reading interventions and math. Pierce School is categorized as a Title I school, which means all students are able to receive and benefit from the programs.

“I would like to thank Susie Spikol for coming to our school’s Title I dinner, and for creating such a welcoming environment for students to create and learn about animals and nature,” said Principal Hansen-Proulx. “This was a great event for students and parents to interact with peers and staff. It was wonderful to see students engage in activities and have fun every step of the way.”
