PETERBOROUGH — Superintendent Kimberly Rizzo Saunders is pleased to announce that the ConVal School District has developed a recovery plan to address possible learning gaps that students may have experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic’s interruption of traditional school operations.
Due to the pandemic, education for students in grades K-12 has changed nationwide, with students attending school either through an in-person, hybrid or fully remote model.
Fall data assessments have shown that students nationwide are on average one and half months behind where they would typically be in reading and three months behind where they would typically be in math.
“Adjusting to teaching during a global pandemic was difficult for educators worldwide. I commend our educators for their hard work in providing the best possible experience for our students,” said Superintendent Rizzo Saunders. “As with anything new and unexpected, there were hiccups along the way and we would like to address any possible gaps in student learning to ensure that they do not widen.”
To address any possible learning loss, the ConVal School District has developed a recovery plan to ensure that all students grow and learn both academically and socially.
As a part of the plan, the district will focus on learning acceleration, which requires educators, students and families to be efficient in addressing and closing gaps in student learning for grade-level content.
Once identified, educators will utilize engaging classes paired with high-intensity tutoring when needed to address learning gaps.
Additionally, ConVal High School is offering students the opportunity to recover lost credits through the Summer Boost Program. Classes will be offered in math, social studies, science and English by 11 middle and high school teachers in the district. Some courses are intentionally designed to provide unique strategies for engaging students such as Art & Algebra and Geometry in Construction. Teachers will instruct and coach students through completion of content standards. All courses will use a standards based model to move students toward completion of classes, including Algebra 1, Eastern World Heritage and English.
In addition, students can use this as an opportunity to continue working through the content when the school year starts or have foundational knowledge when taking the course in the future.
The district will monitor program participation and student progress throughout the summer and explore ways to expand it in the future based on early results.
